Xiaogang (Marshall) Ma Leads New Book on Geoinformatics and Data Science

Geological Society of America just published a new book (https://doi.org/10.1130/SPE558) with University of Idaho Computer Science Professor Xiaogang (Marshall) Ma as the leading editor. Geoscience is now facing the huge potential enabled by the cyberinfrastructure, sensor network, big data, cloud computing, and data science. In this new era, what skills should geoscientists know and what actions can they take to foster new research topics? Are there already successful stories of data science in geosciences and what are the experiences? Can data science bring fresh ideas to geosciences, and vice versa? The chapters present answers to those questions by illustrating latest methodologies, technologies and best practices in geoinformatics and data science research, which make the book a useful reference for data-intensive geoscience. About half of the chapters are derived from NSF EarthCube supported research projects.
