Unmanned Aircraft System (“UAS”) use on behalf of the university must be reviewed and approved by the UAS Committee and VP of Research before any flights or launches occur.

  • Not just Drones. A UAS includes balloons, rockets, kites, drones and any “aircraft that is operated without the possibility of direct human intervention… .” See APM 45.35, C-7 for details.
  • Prior Approval Required. Prior approval is required for outdoor and indoor UAS use.
  • Application. Submit an online application for UAS use. Review the application requirements for a list of information and documents that must be included.
  • Policy.  Review the UAS policy at APM 45.35.

Personal UAS use or use not on behalf of the university must be approved by the Executive Director of the Office of Public Safety and Security.

  • Personal or non-UI Use. See APM 95.35 for more information about approvals for personal or non-U of I UAS use.
