HANNAH RUTH PETTYJOHN

Agricultural Science, Communication and Leadership, Class of 2024

Hometown: Walla Walla, Washington

Portrait of Hannah Ruth Pettyjohn

To many, a scholarship is simply another financial donation. To others, it’s an investment in the future. To me, a scholarship embodies the essence of what it means to have a community. It’s a way for others to say they believe in you, value you and see the potential you have. A scholarship is not just about money, it’s about people – the people donating and the people receiving. A bridge between one generation to the next.

In the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences we use the word family a lot – we truly believe that CALS is a family. The CALS family has blessed me and my college experience, from those who listen, those who nurture growth and those who have pushed me to reach my potential. I can full-heartedly say that I am prepared to embark on my career because of the CALS family. Not just because of the classroom knowledge I have received, but also because of the personal growth that I have developed.

What does this have to do with scholarships? Scholarships have allowed me to jump into my education with both feet. To work less and study more. To choose the internship that will give me the skills I need, not focusing on the pay cut I may take. To say yes to more opportunities and worry less. To graduate knowing that I am financially sound rather than swimming in debt.

Thank you for being a part of my community.

Thank you for investing and believing in me. Thank you for being a part of the CALS family. Thank you for being a part of my community.

Idaho Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (CAFE)

“Research at Idaho CAFE will address constraints on water usage and environmental quality while supporting the agricultural sectors of the dairy, livestock, cropland and food-processing industries and exploring solutions for long-term sustainability.”

Mark McGuire

Associate Dean and Director of the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station

Agri Beef Meat Science and Innovation Center Honoring Ron Richard

“Our students in the meat science program truly get a unique experience – they are involved in every aspect of the supply chain from live animal handling, harvest and carcass fabrication to value-added processing, food safety, marketing and working with customers directly. This new top-of-the-line facility will help prepare them to make lasting contributions to the livestock and meat industries.”

Matt Doumit

Sr. Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs

Saad Hafez Endowed Chair of Nematology

“As the highest level of endowed position at the university, an endowed chair in nematology will recognize the legacy Dr. Saad Hafez has built through the establishment of the nematology program at U of I, his contributions to the field of nematology worldwide and the significant return he has provided to Idaho producers and the state’s agriculture industry. Nematodes continue to be a critical threat to much of the crops Idaho is known for and endowing a position in this area will ensure U of I continues to be at the forefront of tackling such a serious issue.”

Michael P. Parrella

Dean and Special Assistant to the President for Agricultural Initiatives
